What is edible gardening? Growing stuff you can eat. Mostly vegetables but also fruit, herbs, and a few flowers. Maybe even sprouts and mushrooms in the winter.

Why are we having meetings? To help people in Central New York learn from experts and from each other how to grow healthy food in their own yards and community gardens, harvest it, and preserve it for the winter.

We also have people willing to answer questions and offer advice on gardening because, while vegetable gardening is not that hard, we have lost a lot of the knowledge and skill that our grandparents had. As you try gardening you might want a little help.

SUMMER MEETINGS

Garden Tours

In the summer, instead of meetings at Liverpool Library, we have the chance to visit other people's vegetable (and fruit) gardens. Here is what is scheduled so far: they are all on the west side of the city.

  • July 14th (Weds) 6:30 P.M. at John Allen's garden (401 Parsons Drive, Syracuse, NY 13219 - email if you need further directions). Janet Allen will be doing a tour of our habitat garden at the same time. You can tour both, or one, or the other.
  • July 28th (Weds) 6:30 P.M. - same as above.
  • July 31st (Sat) 9:00 A.M. - same as above.
  • August 1st (Sun) 3:00 P.M. - same as above.
  • August 7th (Sat) 9:00 A.M. - same as above. But, in addition, there will be a tour of Allie Brink's garden at 10:30 A.M. She lives at 217 Woodland Road, which is about 3/4 mile from the Allen residence. [Woodland Road can be reached by taking Terry Road south from W. Genesee Street (Terry is a short distance east of Fairmount Fair), then turning right on Fern and left on Woodland Rd.] On this day you could visit both the Allen vegetable garden and Allie's garden, or one, or the other.

IF YOU WOULD BE WILLING TO HAVE PEOPLE VISIT YOUR GARDEN, please let me know and I will send that information out. Or, if you have some garden problems for which you are seeking answers, let me know. There are some in the group willing to come and help.

Free movie on lawn pesticides

On July 26th at 6:30 at Liverpool Library, Habitat Gardening in Central New York is sponsoring a free showing of A Chemical Reaction. This is an award-winning film that tells the true story of how citizens in one small town in Ontario became concerned about lawn pesticides and how their actions ultimately led to the entire province of Ontario banning the aesthetic use of lawn pesticides. If you are not aware of the potential dangers of lawn pesticides this is a film you should see.

A short presentation on organic lawn care will follow the film.

See Meetings page for information about past and future meetings.
